“A Court of Mist and Fury” is Dazzlingly Better Than the First Book

I realized how badly I’d been treated before, if my standards had become so low. If the freedom I’d been granted felt like a privilege and not an inherent right.

Coming from someone who was sorely disappointed by A Court of Thorns and Roses, I could not have been more shocked by this sequel. It only took a couple chapters for me to fall in love with this book.

I loved everything—the characters, plot, fantasy world, writing, and romance. Can these be the very same things that annoyed me in book one? Yes, they can.

I was not a fan of the first book. A lonely human girl gets whisked away by a buff, golden-haired Fae? Ugh. No thanks. But in this book everything was upgraded so that it was a million times better.

First we have our amazing narrator, Feyre. The timid, bland girl from book one matured so much and developed a stunning confidence. Feyre is still recovering from being Under the Mountain, trying to understand her Fae abilities, and her new position in the Night Court.

She learned to grasp the freedom to command her own life. At times Maas almost seemed to be mocking Tamlin’s treatment of Feyre in the first book, how he locked her up and tried to control her.

The romance was slow-burning and brilliant. Though it wasn’t the center of the plot, I loved every page of it. It felt darker and more mature. I loved Rhys—sarcastic, brooding, playful Rhys—and how he treated Feyre as his equal.

I whirled, and through the night drifting away like smoke on a wind, I found Rhysand straightening the lapels of his black jacket. “Hello, Feyre darling,” he purred.

Political elements were introduced. Different Courts were shown warring with each other by playing games, lying, and manipulating. It was very different from the fantasy action of Throne of Glass, but oh my, it felt so much more dangerous. . . .

This is the Sarah J. Maas that I love. I’m not sure how it could get any better than this, but after that unbelievably cruel ending I’m just dying to read book three.
